What is it?
Beckn VC is a credential issuance service that enables Network Participants to obtain verifiable, tamper-proof certificates about their identity, history, and reputation in the Beckn ecosystem. Built on global open standards, these credentials are portable and verifiable not just within Beckn networks but anywhere in the world that supports W3C Verifiable Credentials.
Global Standards Compliance

W3C Verifiable Credentials (VC) Data Model — The foundational standard for expressing credentials on the web in a cryptographically secure and privacy-respecting manner.
W3C Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) — Self-sovereign identifiers that don't depend on centralized registries, enabling global resolution.
JSON-LD & Schema.org — Linked data format with Schema.org vocabularies for semantic interoperability, making credentials machine-readable and universally understood.
W3C VC Status List — Standardized revocation mechanism for checking credential validity.
This means a credential issued for an ONDC seller can be verified by a logistics provider in Singapore, a fintech in Dubai, or any system that supports W3C VCs—without any Beckn-specific integration.
Types of Credentials
Proof of Participation
Certifies that an entity is a legitimate participant in the network. Issued when a BAP, BPP, or Gateway completes onboarding and meets network requirements.
Examples: ONDC Network Participant certificate, Beckn One membership, NFO-verified seller status, domain-specific certifications (e.g., FSSAI-compliant for food delivery).
Proof of Transaction
Provides historical context about an entity's activity on the network. Captures transaction volume, fulfillment patterns, and operational history over time.
Examples: "Completed 10,000 orders on ONDC", "Active seller since January 2024", "Processed ₹50L GMV in Q3 2025", monthly transaction summaries.
Proof of Trust
Aggregates reputation signals into a verifiable trust score. Combines ratings, reviews, fulfillment rates, and dispute history into a single, auditable credential.
Examples: "4.8 stars from 2,500 ratings", "99.2% order completion rate", "Zero disputes in 6 months", "Top Seller - October 2025".
How it works
Issuance
An authorized issuer (NFO, network participant, or certified entity) submits credential data to the VC service via API or UI. The service creates a W3C-compliant credential using JSON-LD and Schema.org vocabularies, signs it cryptographically with the issuer's private key, and returns a portable verifiable credential. The credential can be stored in any standards-compliant wallet, attached to the entity's registry record, or shared directly with counterparties—within or outside the Beckn network.
Verification
Any party can verify a credential's authenticity without contacting the issuer. The verifier retrieves the issuer's public key (via DID resolution or registry lookup), checks the cryptographic signature, validates the credential hasn't expired, and confirms it hasn't been revoked. Because it follows W3C standards, verification works with any compliant verifier globally—not just Beckn-specific tools.
Revocation
When a credential is no longer valid—due to policy violation, expiry, or changed circumstances—the issuer can revoke it. Revoked credentials are added to a W3C VC Status List published on DeDi (Decentralized Directory). During verification, the revocation status is checked automatically, ensuring invalid credentials are rejected even if the signature is technically valid.
